Email 3, Check your supplies before you start preserving

You can save a lot of time and money with one simple habit, check your supplies and ingredient amounts before you begin.

Preserving days go best when everything is ready. No last-minute store runs, no swapping jars halfway through, no guessing if you have enough lids, sugar, or vinegar. A quick pre-check keeps the work calm and keeps your food safe.

The 10-minute pre-check that saves your whole session

Before you wash produce or heat a canner, do this:

  • Read the recipe start to finish. Make note of every tool and ingredient.
  • Count your jars and lids. Match jar size to the recipe, then add a couple extra jars.
  • Check tools for wear. Look at jar rings, tongs, a jar lifter, and your rack.
  • Confirm you have enough ingredients. Measure now, not mid-batch.
  • Pick your method and stick with it. Water bath, dehydrator, freezer, pressure canner, each needs different gear.

It also helps you spot gaps early, when you still have time to adjust your plan.

If you’re water bath canning soon

A good setup keeps the process smooth, especially when you’re doing multiple batches.

  • Use this list to check your basics and fill in what’s missing: water bath canning supplies
  • Make a quick “canning box” so your tools stay together (lifter, funnel, headspace tool, labels).

If dehydrating is on the plan this week

Dehydrating saves space, reduces waste, and turns extras into grab-and-go food. It also goes better when you know your machine can handle the batch you want to dry.

  • Before you start slicing, review this guide: best food dehydrators buying guide
  • Quick check, trays clean, enough liners, and a plan for where finished food will cool.

Set yourself up for the season (and for gifting)

If preserving gifts are part of your plan, now is the time to check your stock. Labels, boxes, jars, and storage containers always go faster than expected.

This week’s simple action

Pick one preserving project you want to do next. Write the ingredient list, then do a fast inventory in your pantry and gear stash. If something is missing, add it to your next shopping trip, then you’re ready when the produce is ready.

Happy Preserving!
